Adrenaline (C9H13NO3), otherwise known as Epinephrine, is a catecholamine and belongs to the family of biogenic amines. It forms colourless to white crystalls (mp: 211-212 °C). Adrenaline is air and light sensitive and forms dark products during decomposition.
Adrenaline is primarily a medication and hormone. It is normally produced by both the adrenal glands and certain neurons. It plays an important role in the fight-or-flight response by increasing blood flow to muscles, output of the heart, pupil dilation, and blood sugar. As a medication it is used for a number of conditions including: anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, and superficial bleeding. Inhaled epinephrine may be used to improve the symptoms of croup. It may also be used for asthma when other treatments are not effective. It is given intravenously, by injection into a muscle, by inhalation, or by injection just under the skin.
Jokichi Takamine first isolated epinephrine in 1901. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system. It is available as a generic medication.
