The name Tramp Art is misleading and is a modern re-branding of chip carved work made from found materials (usually packing crates or cigar boxes) by just about anyone who was inclined and had a pocket knife., usually but not exclusively by itinerant workpeople. The availability of raw materials was key – millions of cigar boxes were sold every year and these when discarded made the perfect building blocks for a variety of pieces.
