This sculpture appears to be an interpretation of the Monument to Virgil in the Piazza Vergiliana in Mantua, Italy. The Piazza was commission by the French General Di Miollis in around 1800 in honour of the Roman poet who was local to the area and was an attempt to endear the locals to them after their occupation and siege of the area.
