“Hubert Williams (1905–1989) Painter, printmaker and illustrator, his artistic career began when he won first prize in a painting competition to launch the Children’s Newspaper. Studied at Royal Academy Schools, 1927–32, where he was a Landseer Scholar. Also studied at St Martin’s School of Art and Central School of Arts and Crafts. During World War II he was engaged on map drawing. He became a freelance artist noted for his drawings of London buildings and street scenes, work appearing in The Times, The Observer and Blue Peter Magazine. Williams also undertook portraiture and the illustration of children’s books. Showed at RA, RP, RI and was for a time a council member of SGA. Imperial War Museum, Ferens Art Gallery in Hull and many other museums hold his work.”
