Author The Art of Revolver Shooting, Winans owned hunting and shooting rights to 250,000 acres in the Scottish Highlands across Glen Strathfarrar, Glen Cannich and Glen Affric. In 1884 he attempted to prosecute a Scotsman, Muirdoch Macrae, for grazing a lamb on the ancestral lands of Clan McCrae but owned in law by Winans.
