St Mary-le-Bow had suffered only superficial damage for the greater part of the London Blitz. Sadly, however, on the 10th of May the final night of the Blitz (a night known as ‘the worst raid’ when a full moon lighted the German bombers up the Thames to central London) the church received a number of direct hits causing a fire which destroyed the entire interior, sparing only the outer walls and the Portland Stone tower.
