Bought from a private collection, the original provenance of this wrought iron cage has been lost. It can only be assumed that it was positioned in a country estate of some note. Part of the servant bell system - the wire network of communication running through all major houses in the 19th Century we can only guess whether the bells, probably of different tones were there to summon a carriage, signal the arrival of a guest or bring the gardeners in for their lunch.
