the central couple in seventeenth century dress, a ship atop an inscription from Sir Walter Raleigh's 'Pilgrimage', and a banner behind with symbols of pilgrimage and St James may be in reference to New World settlers. Also present are depictions of arriving peoples- Romans and Normans. There is a mix of Pagan and Christian imagery, as well as depictions of country life. The face at the far left, peering over a sheet of paper, is believed to be that of the artist. This fragile work on paper has been laid down onto a framed panel by a professional paper conservator, -
