Mrs Stansfield is shown dressed fashionably en Turquerie, in a turban with silk robes and ermine trim, perhaps an oblique acknowledgement of her wealth derived from tobacco or her city connections. The Caravan Signed and dated 'George Charlton 1935' A Gypsy caravan shown shaded by the boughs of two Elm trees on Hampstead Heath. The painter George Charlton was born in London in 1899. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1914 before joining the staff in 1919. He later taught at the Willesden School of Art from 1949–59 and was an examiner in art for the University of London for many years. Showed widely in London he achieved his first one-man show at Cork Street's Redfern Gallery in 1924 before exhibiting solo at the avant-garde Beaux Arts Gallery on Bruton Place. Bert Pugh (1904-2001) sometimes known as Sullivan Pugh, born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. When he was young his family moved to London, where he spent much of his life, joining the Chelsea Art Club. Pugh studied for three years at a building school, at 17 becoming an architectural and ecclesiastical draughtsman, church craftsman and woodcarver, afterwards designing bookplates and practising calligraphy. While owning a commercial art studio in the Strand, he spent evenings studying from life and painting and began to exhibit in the capital. Pugh also spent some time as a commercial artist with the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson.£580 -
