An English metal and plastic reflector disc
mid 20th Century, salvaged from the entrance to The Milk Marketing Board HQ in Thames Ditton Surrey
the circular disc studded with 14 red reflector discs
£45
We might reflect that when this disc was in use at The Milk Marketing Board in Thames Ditton in the 1960’s, the team within had hit upon marketing magic: The Ploughman’s Lunch. Whilst “ploughman’s lunch” wasn’t a new phrase, the team at the MMB seized it, redefined it and made it theirs with the express purpose of selling more British cheese in pubs. Alongside an advertising campaign they distributed “Ploughman’s Lunch showcard” to 5000 pubs. It worked. To this day, the Ploughman’s Lunch is considered staple pub fare as if it ever was.
This reflector was salvaged by Charles Brooking in February 1997.
