Although generally described as stones used to apply pressure during the manufacture of cheese, we suspect that this weight could have originated in any number of industrial settings: not specifically cheese. Every derrick, Scotsman crane, gantry and press would have counter-balancing weights such as this – operating as they did without hydraulics.
