This lead cistern may have been reformatted and could have originally served as a large decorative panel on lead rainwater-goods – it does seem quite low to have been a water cistern. Initialled leadwork was often struck to mark an event such as a wedding but here, with 1831 being the coronation year of William IV, it is feasible that here the initials refer to the central motif: “Rule, Britannia!”.
