An English Ketton stone chimneypiece

19th Century, in the George III taste

the inverted breakfront shelf above the frieze carved in relief with a repeating lattice pattern and centred by a tablet carved with a Vesta mask within a sunburst and raised on attached column jambs headed by patera endblocks,

The fact that a chimneypiece of this design is carved from stone rather than marble may point to a provincial origin - perhaps Lincolnshire where Ketton stone is quarried rather than an urban source where masons and marbles were more readily available. The central mask depicts Vesta : Goddess of the hearth and home.
