This pair of sculptures are an example of a canon that has been worked on since antiquity and can be compared, for instance, to a Roman sarcophagus relief in the Ashmolean depicting drunken putti, and Rysbrack’s early 18th Century terracotta putti in the V&A. This brace of figural reliefs are carved in stone and work beautifully as a framing pair: be it in a garden or conservatory or hallway. The four figures are nicely composed with sinuous lines created by their embracing arms and symmetry to their projecting elbows, knees and hips. We have found reference to other renditions of this model – both carved in stone and cast in composition stone. LASSCO salvaged this pair, pleasantly weathered, from a large villa in Kensington where they were wall-mounted above the gardens on the rear aspect of the house.
