Burmantofts Faience Pottery jardiniere with a vivid turquoise glaze. English circa 1890

The pleasing shaped jardiniere having a thick rim leading to main tapered body, with fourteen raised tubed segments again tapered with arches at the top flower heads and a stylised Greek key below. Burmantofts factory began a business purely focused on the production of piping and construction materials, and then expanded into the production of very colourful art pottery. The pottery they produced was known as faience a type of tin glazed earthenware which the French had perfected. The key vibrant glazes and decoration also included a technique called barbotine (French for ceramic slip) a mixture of clay and water used for moulding or decorating pottery, before the item is fired. Please note that the piece has a minor hair line crack to the rim.
