    An extraordinary run of English mahogany-veneered ship’s panelling

    five large sections of curved parcel gilt panels, each comprising two short panels above two large rectangular fielded panels, a chair rail  - richly relief-carved with a running guilloche moulding, and two short panels below (some as hidden cupboard doors), with a plain skirting, the vertical intervals panelled with low mouldings in corresponding registers; the fielded panels quartered and book-match veneered, the raised mouldings carved with lambrequin ornament, stamped to the rear "Mellier & Co."

    the cornice, convex in section and carved with panels of strapwork between grotesque masks over a frieze of applied fretwork, all above a central parcel-gilt and polychrome painted armorial panel, carved with the arms of Howard impaling Knyvett*, flanked by supporting feline herms; the armorial panel is flanked by two pairs of herm figures carved in deep relief - two moustachioed males and two females - with panels of cartouches between them and a breakfront frieze below, ornamented with carvings of opposed dolphins and scrollwork, *Katherine Howard née Knyvett, Countess of Suffolk, inherited Charlton Park on the death of her father, Sir Henry Knyvett, in 1598.  Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, wed Katherine around 1580; the union is represented in the central combined, or impaled, arms,

    in four sections, vertically mitred to form two "corners", each panel cut with rectangular apertures screened with fret-cut pierced Indian-inspired ornament (later back-boarded to make "blind"), egg and dart and other mouldings run the length of the panelling, indications that the mouldings ran around an integral clock, that brackets enabled metal stanchions either for book-rests, hand-rail or safety screens, a hatch enabled ladder access,
