Originally conceived by Assemble and Will Shannon in 2015 for the restoration of a group of houses in Granby, Liverpool, Granby Rock is a material which uses waste building and found materials as the aggregate for a terrazzo like man-made stone. Brick, slate and other construction by-products destined for landfill are used in place of chips of marble, granite and glass typically found in more ‘refined’ recipes. These fire surrounds formed part of the Turner prize winning exhibit in 2015.
