Exceptional ‘New Iron Age’ hand wrought fire grate,

late 1970s, attributed to Anthony Robinson, Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (FWCB),

with ornamental flames surrounding the angled grate bars.

 

A comparable fire grate is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, item No. M.75-1979

The design featured in 'An Introduction to Ironwork', Marian Campbell, 1985, and in 'The English Fireplace: Its architecture and the working fire', Nicholas Hills, 1983

Take from the website of the Victorian & Albert Museum – ‘Antony Robinson was one of the first artist-blacksmiths and a key part of the ‘Renaissance’ in blacksmithing in England in the 1970s and 1980s, represented at the exhibition ‘Towards a new iron age’, held at the V&A in 1982…Robinson was one of the first British blacksmiths to experiment with new forms in iron. He designed and forged the pair of stainless steel gates for the medieval Great Hall in Winchester, Hampshire, 1981-3’
