An English cast iron fireback,
20th Century, cast from a 17th Century pattern,
the arched rectangular plate cast in relief with an heraldic lion surrounded by the insignia of the realm and bearing the date "1641",

This fireback, much reproduced since it was first cast in the Weald of Kent during the English Civil War, is one example of a Royalist tone found in the production of the Weald foundries of the time. There are variants of this pattern - one of which is held at The Victoria and Albert museum.
