Late 19th century Italian artist, Serra was born in Piedmont and later studied under Professor Andrea Gastaldi at the Albertina Academy in Turin where he won a gold medal for portrait painting. At the Italian Exhibition in Turin in 1884 he exhibited a portrait of a woman named Elda, which was publicly acclaimed. Preoccupied by the downward gaze of the model he went on to produce about fifteen versions.
