The symbolism of Christ and Christians as shepherd and sheep is founded on the parables in Luke (15:3-7) and John (10:1-18): 'I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.' And to a lesser extent by Psalm 23: 'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
Depicted above is an eagle. It was a medieval symbol of Christ's Ascension. It is also, more relevantly, the attribute of John The Evangelist from whom the 'Good Shepherd' quote comes.
