c.1905, probably by the Guild of Handicraft, Chipping Campden, and in the manner of C.R. Ashbee,

the tapering steel top-rail and uprights with central ogee device and partially twisted looped side-rails, over the formed copper plinth bearing decorative riveted straps and clasps,

the Guild of Handicraft, established in 1888 in London’s East End by Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942), moved to the Gloucestershire Cotswolds village of Chipping Campden in 1902, closing in 1907.  The Guild, a cooperative, produced some of the finest metalwork of the time, including the jewellery and silverware designed by Ashbee himself.  The looping side-rails to this fender echo the sinuous elements of Ashbee’s designs; the detailing in the smith’s work: elegantly tapering bars and fine twists, point to this being the product of a first-rate workshop,
