    Although Georges Rouault a contemporary of Cubism, Expressionism and Fauvism, he never formally associated himself with any of these movements. As an independent he found his inspiration in the realities of everyday life and in religious subjects which he imbued with an authentic spirituality. Early in his career Parisian art dealer, Ambroise Vollard, bought the full contents of Georges Rouault’s studio. The artist agreed on the condition that he could finish his work at his own pace. Most of his works represented circus figures, religious subjects or landscapes.

    The Collector by Dan Hillier (1973-2024)

    Dan Hillier captured the zeitgeist of the early noughties with his collages that combined Victorian source materials with human, animal, and arcane elements into mysterious surreal art works. Born in Oxfordshire he went on to study Illustration and Graphic Arts at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, later living and working in Stoke Newington, London. Beginning to sell his prints from a market stall in East London he eventually attracting the attention of prestigious gallerists and commercial collaborators like Shakespeare’s Globe, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and the National Theatre. Dan’s distinctive art graced the opening titles of the 2018 BBC drama series Requiem. He moved to Dartmoor in 2022 to be closer to his family and nature but sadly, Dan Hillier passed away in 2024 following a short illness.

    After Jean-Antoine Watteau Antoine (1664-1721) A full-size Mid 19th Century studio copy of the 18th Century genre picture entitled Récréation Galante by the French Roccoco painter Antoine Watteau. Set in a broad, faded-gilt composition french style frame with deep scoop sides, decorated all over in husk-and-guilloche with gadrooned and heavy applied corners of shell-and-foliage.
