The Persian town of Tabriz was the home of the finest woven carpets in the fifteenth and sixteenth century (Shah Abbas period) and after years of dormancy their historic excellence was revived in the late nineteenth century, repositioning itself at the forefront of the carpet weaving world. Hadji Jallili was head of arguably the finest workshop and as an educated man introduced various aspects of European and Continental art to his designs. His pieces tend to have very high knot density (hence the fine detail of the embellishment) and use subtle tones on light backgrounds, such as the ivory or buff colour of this example. This rug is in essentially good condition with some small areas of staining and wear, and some fading to the border in places.
