These beautiful 18th Century, hand-tinted, engravings (just four of fifteen available) represent, in small part, that age of Enlightenment in which scientific exploration and discovery exploded.
Of particular interest is the early depiction seen here of a ‘Kanguroo’ – first recorded by James Cook in 1770. The enormous single claw to each foot also reminds us of a time, prior to the camera, when the inaccuracies of a hastily drawn sketch or simple word of mouth, could result in a depiction that quite often bore little resemblance to the actual subject.
