Bold contemporary prints in traditional English interiors is nothing new. But recently large stashes of lithographs have emerged from private collections and made their way into stock. In the past a room was dressed in pieces from the correct period. These days however bold decorators are embracing old and new. Put a Matisse next to a William Hogarth and view sat on a c19th smokers bow, illuminated by a Victorian chandelier.

Modern art is also a great conversation starter. A pastoral watercolour or portrait in oil, though beautiful and decorative, won’t get people talking like a framed Matisse lithograph.
