This reason for the abundance of such types of candlestick in the eighteenth (and early nineteenth) century was due to the repetitive and cheap method of manufacturing, which suited smaller workshops. The increased availability of rolled sheet iron in the late eighteenth century led to designs changing and the spiral candlestick was phased out. The purpose of the hook at the top of such candlesticks was twofold; carrying such pieces could prove hazardous due to dripping tallow and the heat of the spiral shaft, the hook negated that. Also it allowed for hanging off a wall hook, or indeed a piece of furniture.
