Salon Wednesdays Lecture Ticket - John Goodall

For all the limitations of stylistic terms they remain the way we categorise and describe interiors. This talk will look at some of the stylistic traditions that have shaped the English country house from the Middle Ages to the Present day. It will also look at the way in which historic styles have been consciously revived.

We’re delighted to announce our third series of ‘Salon Wednesdays’, our evening lectures run alongside Historic Decoration on the history of architecture and design. The talks are held in the Saloon of Brunswick House, Vauxhall, and include wine on arrival. Drinks start at 6.30pm with the lecture starting at around 7pm.

Salon Wednesdays Lecture Ticket - Alidad - 'In Conversation',

We invite you to take part in a dialogue between audience and designer, exploring Alidad’s philosophy, design tips and the inspirations that have shaped the beautiful and unique interiors he has created over many years of living in this country.

English homes have been influenced by the Oriental aesthetic ever since the Crusaders brought back Turkish carpets to warm their draughty medieval halls. Over the centuries our historic houses have been enriched with furniture, textiles and works of art from the Middle and Far East.

Alidad’s colourful interiors transcend fashion and draw inspiration from his Iranian heritage. He cleverly combines elements of both eastern and western traditions, reflecting his profound understanding of the history of both the Oriental and European decorative arts.

Salon Wednesdays Lecture Ticket - Håkan Groth - 'Neo Classicism in Northern Europe',

Hakan will explain how Scandinavia adopted the 18th century neoclassical narrative of its southern neighbours and developed their own unique and elegant version.

Modern English interiors have been considerably influenced by the Swedish aesthetic. Over the last two decades the interior design press has enthusiastically promoted this attractive and appealing style. The pale grey rooms and painted furniture seen in historic Scandinavian interiors, have become extremely popular in this country and offer a light and fresh alternative to the English ‘country house look’.

Hakan’s book ‘Neo classicism in the North’ is a beautifully illustrated and erudite description of the Scandinavian Historic houses and Palaces of the 18th and 19th century.
