This is a sizable example of an early Georgian fire surround dating to the 1740’s. It has suffered from rust staining – often found in fireplaces of this era. Wrought-iron ties are used at the rear of the flat marble frieze and jambs tying it in to the wall – over time, the iron oxidises and can leach into the marble.
