The word "Andiron" derives from the old English word "Aundion" meaning literally "hound of iron" or "fire dog" which is another term for them. The French call them "chenets" derived from the word "chein". The German usage however likens these iron tripods to goats. Call them what you will, they date back in a similar form to medieval times, often with the purpose of securing extremely large logs and enabling air to get underneath. Antique examples survive, often found by "LASSCO St. Michael's", with hooks for spits and circlets or cressets for pots of mead, their "billet bars" often all but burnt through.
