This register grate was languishing in a barn in Kent and bought as part of a clearance. We have only gently cleaned and burnished the detail of the register plate as the finish is otherwise original – the damper plate has been rebuilt. To find one of these “Rumford grates” with the articulated damper plate still operating with a key is rare. To find the grille with a similar mechanism enabling the grille to be tipped – for the spent embers to be dropped onto the hearth and swept away before re-setting a fire – is very rare!
