the tall pierced backplate cast with Baroque ornament and a pair of seated figures supporting a vase and bearing the founder's stamp, above the bowed railed basket, flanked by caryatid putti and raised on shaped supports,

Partners since 1846, the Corneau brothers, Alfred (1825-1886) and Emile (1826-1906), settled by 1859 in the Petit-Bois district in Charleville. They specialised in finely cast decorative ironwork and were known for their production of magnificent umbrella stands, benches, vases, and funeral crosses. By the 1890’s they were employing 300 people. Albert Deville (1844-1913), son-in-law of Alfred Corneau took the foundry on into the 20th Century- later re-naming it the Deville Foundry.
