St. Patrick robed in a blue pearl-embroidered chasuble wears a jeweled mitre and pearl-embroidered gloves. His left hand holds a crozier, embellished in the crook with a dove, emblem of the Holy Spirit. In his right hand is a spray of shamrock.

St. Augustine of Canterbury, the gold merse of his red cope with jeweled orphreys, is ornamented with the figure of Christ the King, seated and bearing the orb. He wears a jeweled mitre and in his left hand is a cross with crucifix.

St. Columba robed in a blue jeweled cope and mitre he holds in his left hand a crozier with the sacred monogram in the crook. His right hand holds a church.

    Nicholson was recommended by his friend, James McNeil Whistler to the publishers Heinemann as an original and expert wood-cut artist.  The relationship with the publisher was highly successful, establishing Nicholson’s reputation as an illustrator. Between 1897 and 1900 he illustrated five works: An AlphabetAn Almanac of Twelve Sports, Twelve PortraitsLondon Types, and The Square Book of Animals.
