The railing doubled up as reading slopes for the large volumes of tax records formerly kept at Somerset House. Once formed from merging of the Stamp Office and the Tax Office, the Inland Revenue finally vacated Somerset House in 2011.
There are two conforming runs of slightly different sizes as follows:
Heavier type:
14No. posts 107cm (42"high) to top of vertical, 13No. X-frame panels on 184cm (72")centres, 4No. curved X-frame panels = Straight run of approx. 24m
Lighter type:
10No. posts 107cm (42"high) to top of vertical, 8No.panels on 147cm (58") centres, together with 1No. curved panel = Straight run of approx 12m
