The work of the Morris Singer Foundry will be familiar to most Londoners as their bronze statues, memorial panels, works of art and architectural details embellish numerous buildings, parks and public spaces across the capital as well as other cities both in the United Kingdom and further afield. The origins of the firm are found in Victorian times when the redoubtable John Webb Singer 1819-1904 had expanded his workshop in Frome Somerset from church ornament metalwork and clocks to the production of statuary. By studying the methods of French and Belgian fooundries he perfected the almost lost technique of "Lost Wax" (Cire Perdu) bronze casting.

At the time, large-scale casting of statues was only tackled by three other English firms: Drew & Co (later A.B.Burton) of Thames Ditton, Elkington & Co. of Birmingham and H. Young & Co. of Pimlico.   The Empire, at full stretch, gave cause for a lot of commorative sculpture. Both the techniques that these firms perfected, incorporating both sand casting and the lost wax method, and the more ready supply of the required tin and copper, enabled it.

By the time of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1897 the J.W.Singer Foundry of Frome was a large operation and was attracting numerous commissions including the well known figure of the Empress Victoria herself by J.E.Boehm. At the time of Singer's death in 1904 the firm had twenty different statues on order and two hundred people working there - about forty of them in the casting foundry.

The nature of the demand changed in the Edwardian era; the foundry was making more in the way of repeatable castings and extrusions, much of the latter from their works in Walthamstow. The outbreak of war in 1914 changed things entirely and the foundry became dedicated to the war effort.

In the 1920's Singer's, still in Frome, was suffering from being away from the action and had a new competitor in Dorset Road Lambeth - The William Morris Foundry. William Morris was not "the" William Morris but he, cannily, did nothing to assuage any confusion that arose from those who assumed that the foundry and the great Arts and Crafts designer were associated. They were gaining quite a few commissions that Singers would have otherwise landed. Morris had also gained the employ of a number of Singer foundrymen. A merger followed in 1927 - the following article appeared in the Somerset Standard on 27th May:

"J.W.Singer & Sons Ltd, An Impending Change Owing largely to the geographical position of the works, to the changing conditions affecting labour and the distance from raw material supplies, the firm of J.W.Singer & Sons Ltd finds it impossible to continue profitably in Frome, certain of their manufacturing operations. .... To this end a financial arrangement has been made with William Morris & Co (Westminster) Ltd.... hitherto strong competitors, whereby a portion of Singer's manufacturing activities will be gradually transferred to London ... Mr Edgar Singer naturally regrets the changes which in the opinion of his co-directors are necessary and unavoidable."

Many of the Singer casting teams from the Edwardian heyday were re-united in Dorset Road and the "Morris Singer Foundry" remained there for another forty years. They experienced hard times in the Great Depression when the workforce was reduced from about forty men to only five but good times were to return. The present doors date to this period and doubtless were made at the foundry as a showpiece reminding visitors that this was the foundry responsible for the colossal doors at Herbert Baker's new Bank of England.

Sir Charles Wheeler was protege to Baker - a young sculptor he spent years on the scaffold at the Bank of England carving The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street  and the entire sculptural series on and in the building including The Telemons on the facade, the figure of Ariel atop the dome on the Lothbury corner as well as the huge series of bronze doors that were inserted into Soane's retained curtain wall. Wheeler returned to Morris Singer's throughout his illustrious career - he became President of The Royal Academy, the only Sculptor to ever hold the post - in the 1950's.

Morris Singer also produced the massive doors at the headquarters of the RIBA in Portland Place (1939) and, after the war, the Front Doors and Bullion doors of the Barclays Bank Headquarters at Gracechurch Street. These enormous Barclays front doors were acquired by LASSCO and were sold to a private buyer recently.

The Morris Singer Foundry remained in Lambeth until its new spacious works were completed in Basingstoke, Hampshire in 1967. The foundry operated there until 2005 when the name was bought and the firm was subsumed by Zahra Modern Art Foundries based in Braintree Essex.   Below, a by-no-means fully comprehensive, list of major works by "Singers of Frome" from mid-century and "The Morris Singer Art Foundry" of Lambeth before their move to Hampshire in 1967. The list, recorded on the Zahra Foundries website, in its length, scale and prestige gives an idea of the reputation that the foundry had and the impact it has made on the world. Look for castings such as the Lions in Trafalgar Square, the figure of Cromwell at Parliament Square as well as sculptors including Stevens, Boehm, Gilbert, Thorneycroft, Reid-Dick, Epstein, Moore and Hepworth.
