Painter of landscapes, humorous genre and illustrator. Born 18 February 1899 in London. His first one-man exhibition was at the Redfern Gallery 1924. He studied at the Slade School from 1914 and joined the staff there 1919, where his first met his wife, Daphne; then a pupil. A painter herself, she became the lover of George Charlton's friend, Stanley Spencer.
