Lemuel Francis Abbott was an English portraitist and painter. The the son of a Leicestershire clergyman, he went to London to study painting with Francis Hayman shortly before the latter’s death in 1776; he may have completed his studies in Derby with Joseph Wright of Derby.
He is chiefly famous for his naval portaits including a famous portrait of Lord Nelson, now hanging in Downing Street.
