This is a replica piece and also available through our printed catalogue. This figure was inspired by the nymphs in the John William Waterhouse painting of "Hylas & the Nymphs" c. 1896, now in Manchester City Art Gallery. The painting was exhibited widely, including at the Paris Exhibition of 1900. Waterhouse is renowned for using a select band of beautiful girls for his models. Little is known about them. It is known however that one of his most used models was a Muriel Foster (1878-1969) who posed for three of the six water nymphs in the picture including the figure on the right hand side, of which this sculpture is an interpretation.
