History

This is a replica piece. This fountain is appropriate for the garden in that Zephyr - The West Wind of Springtime - was married to Chloris - the begetter of flowers (hence the Roman name for her: "Flora"). Zephyr gave Chloris a garden of flowers. Poussin depicts this garden in a painting, now in Dresden, "Garden of Flora", where each bloom represents figures from myth who were transformed into flowers. Chloris is often depicted being chased by Zephyr, who on catching her, embraces her, causing flowers to spill from her mouth.
