History

Scagliola: Made from pigmented plaster and marble chips (or a similar aggregate)cast then polished, it could be fashioned to resemble any species of true marble By the 1820 the fashion for scagliola had spread like wildfire. It was made into panels, where it was often varnished or polished with linseed oil.The end result could be hugely impressive: on the staircase at Charles Barry's Reform Club, and it cost a fraction of the cost of the real thing.
