A large North African terracotta storage jar,
19th Century, hand thrown,
the bulbous jar with a weathered patina, with ornamental ribs and "X" motifs, raised on a wrought steel stand,
This pot was sourced in Morocco; similar pots can originate from anywhere in the Mediterranean region - although old ones like these are becoming hard to find. It could be considerably older than 19th Century - they are hard to date. they've been made this way for at least three millennia. They are often kept in cool cellars and are sealed for long-term and seasonal storage of all manner of produce: grain, olive oil, figs etc. They make wonderful garden ornaments - whilst we can't guarantee them against frost we know them to be very hardy.
