History

These sturdy padlocks were used by Customs & Excise to secure and monitor the payment of duty on liquor held in bonded warehouses. On locking the padlock, a paper ticket is inserted to the compartment – on closing the lid, the ticket is punctured by prongs, on turning the key, the prongs rotate, tearing a circle in the ticket and rendering the padlock tamper proof. This padlock was retained at Somerset House and is known to have been in use at the Speyside Glen Moray distillery.
