the standing male in habit and cloak, carrying a bible in one hand and grasping his robes in the other, his chin slightly raised and his eyes half-closed in a pensive mood,

The figure appears to have been mounted in an architectural, presumably church, context as he is not finished to the back where the finger marks of the sculptor are evident in the clay. The patina worn, smoky and waxy – commensurate with life in a church. Distress to digits in places.
