Chocolat Mexicain, French Art Nouveau advertising poster

The Swiss born Eugene Grasset (1841 - 1917) was a hugely significant figure in the shaping of the French Art Nouveau movement and later influenced many generations of artists as a teacher. When aged 30, he relocated to Paris and commenced his artistic career illustrating books and designing prints for interiors, such as fabrics and wallpapers. In 1877 Eugène Grasset turned to graphic design, producing income-generating products such as postcards and eventually postage stamps for both France and Switzerland. However, it was poster art that quickly became his fortee and he began to work for an increasing amount of international commercial clients ensued such as this poster commission for Chocolat Maison which has been described as 'a work of art that transcends its commercial purpose
