Ezra 'Elmer' Keene was born in Osberton near Worksop in Nottinghamshire in 1853 to a Quaker family. Keene originally worked as a photographic artist but by 1901, the family had moved to Leicester where he worked as an painter until about 1914.

His romanticised moonlit views and evocative landscapes proved commercially successful. Prints, postcards and stereo views based on his paintings were sold in Europe and the United States.
