An old English oak beam,

probably 16th or 17th Century,

the rectangular section beam, carved along its length with apotropaic incisions,

Apotropaic marks were in widespread use from about 1550 to 1750 in England, Scotland and subsequently the New World. Subtle and secretive nicks, notches and runes were cut into fireplace lintels to guard against incursions from evil spirits.
