An English limestone and composition stone sundial pedestal,

early 20th Century,

the circular top raised on an octagonal section stem and spreading foot, all on a circular Yorkstone base comprising two graduated steps, each step bearing an incised dedication "**Marden Fecit 1737" and "G. Crump 1925"
Dimensions: 120cm (47¼") High, 43cm (17") Wide, 130cm (51¼") At Widest
Stock code: 42550

The provenance of this attractive pedestal isn't known and is slightly mysterious. The inscriptions presumably relate to the instrument or sculpture that the pedestal originally held aloft. Judging by the shadow it has left behind, it was bronze and had multiple fixing points - perhaps an armillary sphere or an astrolabe of some kind.

It would lend itself beautifully to a replacement sundial plate, armillary sphere, or sculpture.
