A rare English double-ended wrought iron andiron

Probably 16th Century or possibly earlier

the billet bar raised on four scrolled supports and terminating with spike finials ornamented with scroll-work and spit rings and hooks and incised decoration,

These earliest of fire dogs date to an age before the chimney ... the fire being lit in the centre of the baronial hall with the smoke finding its way out of a ho;e in the roof above. Penshurst Place has the best known example of these double ended andirons in its collection.
